Retailers Are Losing the Software Talent Wars

This is so true.

Retailers have crappy, non-sexy legacy systems to integrate with, view software developers as a cost center, have tons of management and bureaucracy, and pay mediocre wages. The problems they are facing could be interesting to solve if it was worthwhile working there. But on the whole, it’s not.

Software is eating the world and retailers are being left behind. They make due with expensive consultants (like me) but that is a losing proposition long term.

There’s some interesting comments in the Hacker News thread, too.
